Hi, its my first time posting in the forum. I was trying to install windows 7 on my 2011 imac, everything went flawlessly until the first windows setup restart. First of all there is a blac screen showing every time a restart to install the windowa goes on. I thought it might have been a bad installation and tried to boot into mac os but the option key is not showing anything and it imediately starts booting from the windows cd. Now I am stuck not able to boot into any of the OSs. Is there a way to boot to Mac OS without using the option key? Or what should I do?

You have to press the Option (Alt) key after hearing the startup chime. If you do it before, the iMac won't detect the Bluetooth keyboard and it will start directly to your DVD. Try this

I've tried reset keyboard shortcuts to defaults, a different keyboard, system preferences related to the keyboard, trashing Photoshop preferences, etc.
Basically I'm stuck as my option key works for at least 2 key combinations : opt-cmd-s for Save As .. and opt-cmd-h for Hide Photoshop. It does not, however, work for the zoom tool (zoom out vs. in) or the gray sliders in the blending style dialog box.
Any ideas ? I'm desperate to get Photoshop back to normal ..

Thanks!Yam, I'm using 10.6.8, not 10.9, but I wonder if you might have the same problem I had. It turns out I had inadvertently pressed a keyboard combination that invoked Unicode/Hex Input from the Language & Text preferences, and this prevented the option key from working.
To see if this is the problem do the following (these instructions are for OS 10.6.8; 10.9 will probably have these configured differently):
Open System Preferences > Language & Text.
Click the Input Sources tab.
At the very bottom, on the right, check the box beside 'Show Input menu in menu bar' (there may be an easier way but I don't know of it).
Now, in your Mac menu bar, find the Text Input menu which may look like your national flag, but may not (especially if this is your problem).
On my system, the icon is just to the right of the speaker volume and just to the left of the battery level icon.
You should see your flag and/or language (U.S. in my case.)
Instead, what I saw was this:
To change it back, click the Text Input icon in your menu bar and choose your language from the drop-down menu:
If this was your problem, you'll want to disable the keyboard shortcut so that this doesn't happen again:
Open System Preferences > Keyboard.
Select the Keyboard Shortcuts tab.
Find Select next source in Input menu in the list on the right. If it is checked, uncheck it.

I'm having a very strange issue with my Option Key all of a sudden. It has stopped functioning as an Option Key and will ONLY increase the volume setting. When I bring up the keyboard viewer the Option Key won't register, it just turns up the volume. I've repaired permissions from my install disk and restarted a few times, but it didn't help. I was beginning to think it was a hardware issue, too. BUT, I turned my laptop off last night (instead of putting it to sleep like usual) and now this morning the Option key is working fine again. Seems very odd to me, since I restarted my computer a few times last night and the problem was still there. Perhaps it's heat related?
I'm just wondering now if it's a sign of more troubles to come or just a bizarre random occurrence.

I installed Boot Camp on my new Alu Imac 24' (wired keyboard) and when booting up the option key that should bring up the boot options doesn't work. Is this a known fault with the slimline keyboard and Boot Camp??
I have tried all different combinations of power button and Option key but nothing works.

.I have burned the Windows 8.1 .iso image 3 times and for some reason when I try to start the bootcamp utility I get the message 'The installer disc could not be found'.. I have the Win 8.1 Pro disk in my superdrive and nothing happens! Very frustrating!
Reading other posts like this I have verified the installer disk.
Plants vs zombies 3 download. Ok recently rebuilt 2 older 'Intel Core Duo' Mac Mini's with SSD drives. They work great and have been flying, however on one of them I wanted to setup BootCamp so that I could run Win7 Pro on it as well.
So here is what I did..
- When I first built the Mini's I used a bootable Firewire drive with Snow Leopard installed
- I had the drive divided into 2 partitions at first
- when I tried to install BootCamp error message kept telling me it needed only one part, so I finally made Primary OSX part one big part, then I was able to get BootCamp going
- I choose 'I have Mac OSX Install disc' because 'Download the Windows support software' would not work
- Next it created the BOOTCAMP part and told me to put Win OS disk in drive
- I put in an OEM Win 7 CD I borrowed from work, so I could see how it worked.
- When it rebooted, it Did not recognize CD and all screen said was choose Option 1 or 2, (neither option had any text, and the keyboard would not take any input)
- Tried numerous times to get back to OSX, used every boot option I could find online but none would work. Also Mini would not give back CD for nothing
- Next I opened up Mini to get to CD, I had a friend that was able to get one out by opening up the actual dvd drive but I was trying to avoid that. So what I ended up doing was using a putty knife to keep CD from spinning on bootup. After about 10 to 15 seconds of the CD not spinning, it finally kicked it out for me. (YAY!!)
- New problem, now I have the 'No Bootable Device - - Insert Boot Disk And Press Any Key'
- I have tried the following. Removing the drive and plugging in a Sata to USB cable so I can access it from other Mini
- I thought that if I deleted the BOOTCAMP part it would allow me to boot back to OSX, I tried renaming Part to what it was before, I have tried putting in a Formatted drive with no OS on it, I have tried installing the contents of a Win 7 OEM CD onto Formatted drive as a single FAT part.
Nothing Works, I am either stuck at the 'No Bootable Device' screen, or if I turn on Firewire drive with Snow Leopard I get a blinking cursor that never shows any text.
At this point, I don't want BootCamp on that Mini anymore, I just want my working OSX, but I cant get anything to work and I'm afraid to stick a CD in the Mini for fear it wont give it back to me and I end up damaging it getting it out. I even created a CD with rEFIt on it, but after I formatted a totally different drive and the Mini is still expecting to finish what it start with BootCamp, it leads me to believe that there is some BIOS or data stored somewhere that is not on the harddrive. If so, could I pull the RAM, or push some sort of master Reset button some where?
I'm also thinking that I need a non mac USB keyboard, perhaps maybe there or know Aluminum Keyboard drives in the memory where the Mini is trying to finish the BootCamp install.
As a side note, I sure wish Apple would have designed the Mini to fail Safe not fail broken.

RandyThe Formatted test drive did not have Any OS on it. I just thought that since that was how I installed it originally, that it would work.
I put in SSD straight out of package, connected Firewire drive with SnowLeopard install, and it booted to it and asked me for to install to which drive, I choose SSD and it took off.
So what your saying is, do the same thing but hang SSD from broken Mini onto working Mini and boot up with same Firewire drive, and have it install OS back onto Broken SSD drive.
Assuming all of this works correctly, why would plugging it back into broken Mini work? Wont the Broken Mini still be looking for BootCamp to finish what it started? (just seems that way from what I've experienced so far)As a preface I am new to Apple and more complex computer issues in general. With that said I have spent several hours trying to get Windows 8.1 installed from the DVD media to a partition created using Boot Camp Assistant. I have tried several suggestions and looked through many threads, blogs and articles and none seem to have the correct answer. Below are the steps that I have followed and the issue that I run into every time.
Open Boot Camp Assistant
Select Download the latest Windows support software from Apple
Select Install Windows 7 or later version
Download support software to USB Drive (leave connected)
Create a Partition (200GB)
Hold Option on Reboot and Select Windows
Begin the Windows install process
Select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)
Installation asks: Where do you want to install Windows?
Select Drive 0 partition 4: BOOTCAMP
Error Message Details:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.
Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS.
Solution I found from many threads is that I need to 'Format' the partition. To do so I:
Select Drive 0 Partition 4: BOOTCAMP
Select Format
Select Drive 0 Partition 4 (No longer titled as BOOTCAMP after the reformat)
Error Message Details:

I cant seem to find a solution to this. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried removing all other connected drives and devices, and recreating the partition several times with no luck.

I also have VMware Fusion installed on the machine and already used the Windows installation media to create a virtual machine. Is it possible to transfer my virtual machine to a Boot Camp partition? Open, if not so already, the Windows formatter. Identify the BC Windows partition. It will be the one listed with the proper size you created and/or will be labeled as a C: drive. Be careful you select the right one or you may be corrupting the entire drive.

I have tried connecting my keyboard to it and doing the reset PRAM, SMC, PMU with no luck. I tried installing new Mountain Lion OSX hoping it was a software issue and it is still not working.I had a key fail on my MBA and the problem progressed to other keys. It turned out to be the electoonics in the keyboard, not the individual keys. When it progressed to W, I had to replace it;) Given you have two keys failing at once it could be a similar problem.

To be more specific my left sided 'option' key on my mid 2010 15' MacBook Pro is not responding. The right one works fine. I have Mavericks installed. Us there anyway if trying to fix this as I can't quite afford to go the Genius Bar this month!

I have just installed Win 8.1 via Boot Camp on my Mac Pro (mid-2010) using OSX10.9. I was under the impression that on restarting if I pressed the option key, then I would get all available drives and then be able to choose which one to boot from but in my case, not so. Rebooted and the option key is recognised; I get a blank screen (as I would expect) and a cursor which is controllable but then no drive options appear.
I have three possible boot disks: a Win8.1 partition and a 10.9 partition on on internal HD plus a 10.9 on a Sonnet Tempo SSD plugged into my PCIe slot. I am wondering if the Tempo is the issue and Boot Camp does not like it (is it Boot Camp that controls the option key restart process?). Before I start pulling the Mac Pro apart, I was hoping to get some advice please.

Straight off your hard disk (if you're on Lion this will be at the BOTTOM of your sidebar pane in Finder). If you have the folder marked in yellow and the folder marked in purple called rEFItBlesser please TRASH both.
Be CLEAR: do not remove the Library folder or the StartupItems folder (both marked in purple, too). Remove only the rEFItBlesser folder at the end of the path. You can (and should) remove the whole of the efi Folder (in yellow).
Then restart.

Reinstalling Mavericks depends on several factors:
if you erased your recovery partition
what OS originally came on your Mac.
I'll assume you don't have a backup available that you made before your mishap, because you didn't mention it.
That's really the take home message here: have a backup!
If you still have your recovery partition:
boot into the recovery partition (command R at restart)
use the recovery partition to reinstall Mavericks. see: OS X: About OS X Recovery
if you do not still have your recovery partition, then it depends on whether your Mac originally came with installer disks or not.
If it originally came with installer disks, you would boot from the installer disks, erase your HD, and then reinstall the OS that is on the installer disks, and then upgrade as necessary until you get to Mavericks.
If your mac did not originally come with installer disks, but you managed to erase your recovery partition, then you can try to boot into internet recovery (option-command-R at restart), and use internet recovery to erase your HD and reinstall the OS that originally came with your computer, and then upgrade to Mavericks if you need to. (the reference refers to ML but it applies just as well to Mavericks).I am having quite a panic attack here. I wanted to partition my 2tb hard drive in the second bay to have windows on it. I obviously did this using boot camp. I followed the steps as I had done it before and ended up partitioning 101gb for Windows. The progress bar went very quickly until about 1/3 of the way and just stopped. The animation is still there, but the bar itself it not moving at all. It has been almost 2 hours now and I am seriously considering cancelling the partition by just quitting boot camp. I have a few serious questions however:
1) Am I being too hasty? Should a partition of this size take longer than this on a 2tb hard drive? If so then I will wait.
2) If not, will quitting the Boot Camp application during the partition delete everything on my drive or will it just remove the 101gb that it was trying to partition?
3) If it does just remove the 101gb, how would I go about getting this space back without erasing my whole drive? I have many files that I would like to keep.
4) Also, if I leave Boot Camp running on this screen for a few days, will it damage the drive?
That is was my screen looks like except the blue bar has an animation, the program is not completely frozen, it just is not progressing!

1) Quit boot camp, nothing will happen. You will lose that space temporarily though.
2) Open Disk Utility
3) Select your desired drive and on the first tab, click 'Repair Disk'. It should take about 30 seconds and all my space is back! No files were deleted and everything is back to normal.version 5.0.2(462)

If you haven't got one of those computers and Boot Camp Assistant doesn't show the option to install Windows 7 from a ISO file, your Mac doesn't support the Windows installation from a USB because it's restricted by firmware to a Mac without a SuperDrive. In this case, you have to buy Windows 7 on a DVD from eBay or Amazon, and use it to install Windows through Boot Camp.
If you still wants to install Windows from a ISO file, the only option is to install it on a virtual machine, using an application like Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox

I was mystified as to why the button icons (for Send, Attach, etc) were suddenly missing from my 'new message' email windows. The text descriptions were still there, so i could use the functions, but they were in tiny text, more difficult to click on
